Rules of Designing Good Website

A good website attracts visitors and creates a corporate image of your business. A well designed website always appeals to the target audience or to build a successful website for resulting in more traffic and brisk business.  There are various rules for designing good website. Let us discuss some of the rules that website designers should follow –

No assumptions about the user’s browser: web pages may appear different on different browsers. So it will not be ok to assume that viewer would use a particular browser to browse your website. Web designers need to assume that users can use any browser or his mobile to visit at your website so it must be compatible with various browsers. Web designers can use subset of HTML which is universally recognized.

Visitor’s preferable content – website should not be cluttered up with content that the reader is not interested. The key point here is to focus on reader’s interest. Every website has a goal and every page must contribute to achieve that goal.

Image Optimization is must – there are three things to determined while optimizing images – first is about adding alt tags in images, second is about using correct extension (.png, .jpg etc), last reducing images size. Let’s take a short look upon all three ways of optimizing images –

  • Alt tags stand for alternate text of images that read by search engine because search engine can read only text on a page and images are nothing for search engines.
  • Using appropriate extensions for images can reduce the size of images
  • There are various tools available online that can help to reduce the size of your image it helps on fast loading of your website.

Create navigation with three-click-rules – Website designers need to follow three –click-rules to create website navigation.  Three-click-rules ensure that that any other pages in the site is reachable with no more than three clicks. It is better if there are multiple paths to reach a link, because different reader will try different path between the same pair of pages. Also create an HTML sitemap that helps user to browse your website effectively and allow search engine to deep crawl.

Create Error- free pages – The website designer has to ensure that all the links on the website is alive because any dead link may frustrate your readers and may reduce trust among your readers. Links that pages other sites should be reviewed regularly to search pages that have moved or giving 404 errors.

Avoid unnecessary animation – Animated blinks images could be distracting, every blink, every movement, and the viewer are distracted from the main content of the website.  It is very important to use animation smartly that don’t distract your website goals. There are one another disadvantages of using flash or animation is that search engine is not comfortable to read flash or animation that reduces search engine visibility.

Say no to Frames – It is recommended to not use frames in web pages because they are not easy to crawl by major search engine and can reduce the crawl-ability of any website. In my opinion you must be away from using frames, and only consider them if there really is no other option.
